We talk about a key to success being the speed at which a design team can iterate new components – but the actuality is that, without a manufacturing operation capable of keeping pace, what you have is a set of drawings and some nice ideas. The manufacturing operation sits at the heart of an F1 team: in a sport of continuous updates, the race to build new parts and get them onto the car as soon as possible is incredibly competitive. It’s normal to talk about great drivers, the sweat and toil of mechanics, hard work from engine manufacturers, big brains of chassis designers, aerodynamicists and so forth… but the actual manufacture of parts rarely makes the long list. Where does an F1 team find performance? Ask ten different people and you’ll get ten different answers – but it’s unlikely any of those answers are going to include the word ‘manufacturing’.
